Persons caught with sea shells convicted in Delhi

Two persons from Odisha whom were caught with sea shells (including Bullmouth helmet shells, Trochus, Giant spider conch, Trapezium conch & Cypraea limacina lamarck) during India International Trade Fair in Delhi on 22 November 2009 had convicted by trial court and sentenced to undergo SI for the period already undergone by them along with a fine of Rs. 5,000.

Bangladesh pirates terrorise Sunderbans

In the first week of May, 20 villagers from Kalitola and Hingalgunj block had set out for the Gazikhali Shorshuna area of the Sunderbans in four small boats to collect honey from the interiors of the jungle. It got dark by the time they finished, and as the boats made their way out of an inlet, their path was blocked by two bigger boats, five of them were taken prisoner at gun point and the remaining forced to load the catch of the day — 50 kgs of fresh honey — on to the Bangladeshi boats.

One more tiger poaching reported from Melghat

A major organized gang of local poachers have been busted by the Melghat tiger reserve (MTR) and territorial wing officials on 19 May 2015. Official sources said a tiger was poached in October 2014 in Dhakna range under West Melghat forest division, Maharashtra. Yesterday, during raid three steel traps, poaching tools and other wildlife articles recovered.

Crackdown leads to arrest of more Chinese nationals in red sanders smuggling

Conviction upheld in leopard skins seizure case

Two convicts, one man and a woman whom were filed an appeal against their conviction were rejected by Additional Sessions Judge - Kurukshetra and upheld the sentences pronounced by Special Environment Court to undergo rigorous imprisonment of five years for the offence defined under Section 39 and 49(b) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and punishable under Section 51 of the said Act and to pay fine of 20,000/- each. Both convicts were arrested by Wildlife Inspector - Pinjore with 4 leopard skins in January 2011.

Peacock poacher convicted in Rajasthan

Last month a local court in Alwar had convicted a person for killing a peacock by poisoning at Akbarpur range of Sariska Tiger Reserve in May 2010. Accused has sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine for violating section 9 of Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 2 years imprisonment and Rs. 5,000 fine for violating section 27 of WPA and 3 years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine for violating section 29 of WPA, sentences has to served concurrently.

Rajasthan police arrested a poacher from Haryana

A member of an organized poaching gang and a repeat offender in wildlife crime who was earlier associated with Sansar Chand was arrested by Rajasthan police from Hisar district of Haryana in connection with seizure of two leopard skins at Udaipur district on 5 May 2015.

Elephant and leopard killed in Train and road accidents

An adult male elephant was killed when a speeding passenger train hit the animal while it was crossing tracks in between Madarihat and Hasimara stations in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on 7 May 2015.

Illegal wildlife trader Ratiram Sharma arrested again

Govt. reply in parliament on seizures of tiger skins/bones

Government replied in Raja Sabha yesterday that reports of cases of illegal trade of body parts of tigers and leopards in various parts of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Western Ghats have been received. However rampant illegal trade of body parts of tigers and leopards has not been noticed.
