Shopkeeper convicted for illegally selling turtles

A trial court in Delhi had convicted a shopkeeper for illegally selling 11 turtles on June 2005, seized species includes 5 Indian Roofed turtles, 5 Indian Tent Turtles and 1 Spotted Pond turtle. The case was registered by Delhi police and complaint was filed by Delhi wildlife department. Court observed that "prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused that eleven turtles were recovered from the aforesaid shop under control and possession of the accused, on the said date, time and place, without any permit or licence, which are specified in Schedule-I and are protected under Act. Trade/business of such animals are prohibited under the Act. Accordingly, accused is held guilty and is convicted for the offence u/s 9/49/49(B)(1) of Wild Life (Protection) Act, punishable u/s 51 of the Act".
