Leopard skin seized in Pithoragarh district

In a joint operation of police and forest department on 28 June 2013, one person was arrested with a leopard skin in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.

Chinese citizens held again with red sanders

Eleven Chinese citizens were detained in Mumbai airport with 370 kg of red sanders packed in 15 bags on 27 June 2013. Earlier this month Chinese citizens were detained in Bangalore airport also with red sanders.

Accused convicted for Illegal possession of Agra monitor lizards

A person found with possession of 40 live Agra Monitor Lizards in January 2010 in Delhi was recently been convicted by trial court. Court found that accused was intending to sell the same and was in custody of prohibited animal without any licence or permit in contravention of Section 9, 44, 49 and 49B(1) of Wild Life (Protection) Act.

Properties of Illegal wildlife trader attached

Various properties acquired by the family of notorious illegal wildlife trader based in Uttar Pradesh were attached by district administration of Allahabad and Enforcement Directorate (ED). ED had charged them under Prevention of Money Laundering Act and submitted that accused persons had purchased immovable properties by indulging in criminal activities in violation of provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, hence their act should be considered as offence of money laundering.

Turtle case accused convicted in Delhi

In a case registered by Delhi police on September 2006, in which three people found to be in possession of 22 Indian Tent Turtles, 1 Roofed turtle and 1 Three-Striped Roofed turtle were pleaded guilty during Order on Charge and court sentenced them to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000/- each along with TRC in default of payment of fine SI for 15 days.

Maharashtra reopens 50 cases of wildlife crime

Maharashtra reopened 50 cases of wildlife crimes pending since 1996. The aim is to bring down pendency, as 90 per cent of the cases are stuck at the investigation or trial level. The cases reopened are those involving species under schedule 1 of Wildlife (Protection) Act.

Illegal mining threatening Ranthambore


The big cats of Ranthambhore National Park (RNP) and their cubs are falling victim to the unabated illegal mining in the region. The most notorious area of mining has been the Kundera range of the park but illegal mining has also been going on unchecked in Uliyana, Ainda and Shyampura inside the tiger habitat. The mafia takes trucks, tractors and trolleys right inside the park for transporting the stones. These activities start before sunrise and continue till around 10 am on a daily basis, sources said.

9 tigers killed in Central India recently

Interrogation of three tiger poachers arrested last week in Maharashtra reveals that their gang had killed 9 tigers recently in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. According to the poachers, the gangs killed tigers in Parseoni (2) near Ramtek, Melghat (2) and Tumsar-Tiroda (2) in Gondia, and Umred (1). The tally goes up to 9 after they revealed on Wednesday that two more were killed in Chhui in Mandla and Seoni, both in MP. However, forest officials are aware of only one death - in Melghat - so far.
