Notorious tiger poachers arrested in Melghat tiger reserve

Maharashtra forest officials arrested six tiger poachers and recovered poaching tools in Melghat tiger reserve, Amravati district. The have admitted to killing a tiger two months ago.

Uttarakhand received prestigious Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Award

International community was honored Uttarakhand police and forest department by awarding prestigious Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement award 2013 at Bangkok during CITES CoP 16 on 5 March 2013. From April 2010 to August 2012 the Uttarakhand Forestry and Police Departments have undertaken nearly 100 seizures of illegally trafficked wildlife; a seizure rate higher than any of their counterparts in other Indian states. These seizures have included a variety of species protected by CITES including big cats, reptiles and amphibians, Asian elephants, bears, crocodiles and more. In the vast majority of these cases, the accused were successfully prosecuted and penalized. The collective efforts of these departments has raised the profile of wildlife crime law enforcement led to an increase in the deterrence of wildlife crime in Uttarakhand.

92 leopards killed in 2 months

The first two months of the year have been deadly for leopards in India as 92 big cats were poached, poisoned, killed by mobs and forest guards and met with accidental deaths during this period. Leopards belong to the Schedule -1 species, under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and need the highest level of protection.
