Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand had found guilty on two persons for illegally trading bear gall bladder and musk pod in September 2008 and sentenced them to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each.

Two tigers reduced to skins and bones

2 kms away from Corbett tiger reserve in Amangarh range of Bijnore forest division of Uttar Pradesh, poachers killed two tigers. Two skins, full skeleton and jaw traps used to killed the animals were seized and twelve persons were arrested by Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh police on 16 December 2013. Some of the people arrested were repeat offenders and was caught from nearby area last year with tiger and leopard skins.

3 bears and 2 leopards shot dead by officials in Kashmir

To minimize the human-animal conflict, trigger happy officials were shot dead three Himalayan black bears and two leopards in Kashmir on last two weeks. Bears were killed on 31st October, 4th and 10th November and leopards on 5th and 9th November.

One more tiger killed, this time in Uttar Pradesh

In a joint operation of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh forest departments five tiger poachers were arrested and they led the investigation team to Mahof range in Pilibhit forest division in Uttar Pradesh where tigress flesh and lathis used for kill the animal were recovered. One of the accused arrested is also wanted in tiger poaching case of Melghat tiger reserve in Maharashtra.

Poachers targeting national parks

The arrest of four poachers hailing from Orissa in the Palar range on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border and one from Bandipur National Park recently has put the Forest Department and wildlife activists on alert. Snare traps, which the poachers planned to lay in the dense jungle to trap the big cats, were seized from them. Forest officials, acting on a tip, seized salt and turmeric powder from the poachers. These items would be used to preserve the skin of the animals after poaching.

Tiger poachers convicted in Uttarakhand

3 years imprisonment for poaching in wildlife sanctuary

A local court in Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh had convicted a person who was detained with dead fishes, axe and traps in Narsinghgarh Wildlife Sanctuary on October 2012. Accused was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine.

Foreign nationals convicted for snake venom smuggling

Two foreign nationals, one each from Ecuador and Nigeria were found guilty in snake venom smuggling and sentenced to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each by Judicial Magistrate First Class-Perumbavoor, Kerala. The case was detected on 26 January 2012 when accused were try to board a Chennai bound flight at Cochin International Airport, during luggage checking officials found snake venom packed in 16 condoms.

Sharp rise in red sanders smuggling by airline staff

Increasing instances of airline staff smuggling red sanders out of the country have alarmed officials, three cases of smuggling by airline operatives have come to light in the past month, the latest one on 20 October 2013 when two crew members of Air India were caught smuggling the wood from Delhi to Hong Kong late at night.

Sloth bear performer convicted in Delhi

A trial court in Delhi had found guilty on a sloth bear performer for possessing the animal without any licence or authority. During the detention he was found with one female sloth bear and was exhibiting performance of bear publicly on October 2005 in East Delhi. Court held that accused contravened the provisions of section 9/49 of Wild Life (Protection) Act. The said offence is punishable u/s 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

Shopkeeper convicted for illegally selling turtles

A trial court in Delhi had convicted a shopkeeper for illegally selling 11 turtles on June 2005, seized species includes 5 Indian Roofed turtles, 5 Indian Tent Turtles and 1 Spotted Pond turtle. The case was registered by Delhi police and complaint was filed by Delhi wildlife department. Court observed that "prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused that eleven turtles were recovered from the aforesaid shop under control and possession of the accused, on the said date, time and place, without any permit or licence, which are specified in Schedule-I and are protected under Act. Trade/business of such animals are prohibited under the Act. Accordingly, accused is held guilty and is convicted for the offence u/s 9/49/49(B)(1) of Wild Life (Protection) Act, punishable u/s 51 of the Act".

Person caught with elephant tusk convicted

A court in Haridwar, Uttarakhand had convicted a person and sentenced him to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine for illegally holding an elephant tusk weighing 6 kg on December 2000.

National Board for Wildlife says no to road widening

According to news reports 30th Standing Committee meeting of National Board for Wildlife held on 4 September 2013 struck down all proposals related to widening of roads, highways passing through Protected Areas in the country. It also decided on setting up a high-level committee to check poaching of tigers and rhinos.

Leopard poachers convicted in Uttar Pradesh

A court in Lakhimpur Kheri district was found guilty in two persons and sentenced them to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each for trapping a leopard using jaw trap (later animal was rescued and rehabilitated by forest department) on July 2010 in Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary.

Poacher convicted for killing two barking deer

A court in Betul, Madhya Pradesh had convicted a person for killing two barking deer on January 2003 and sentenced him to one year rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 5,000 fine.

Poachers arrested with leopard skins convicted in Punjab

A court in Pathankot, Punjab had convicted two persons from Himachal Pradesh and sentenced them to three years imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each in connection with seizure of two leopard skins by police on November last year.

Professional tiger poachers from Haryana whom were arrested with leg-hold steel traps in Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple (BRT) tiger reserve, Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka on July 2012 were convicted by court and sentenced them to three years imprisonment.

Gangetic dolphin meat sold openly in Dibrugarh, Assam

Recently, a fish seller was found selling dolphin meat at a roadside market of Lezai-Kalakhowa, 15 km from Dibrugarh. A local woman clicked the photograph of the person selling meat and informed wildlife activists. Following a hue and cry raised by environmental groups, police registered a case and initiated an enquiry. However, the culprits are yet to be arrested.

IFS officers suspended in Odisha

Odisha government suspended four more forest officials, including two Indian Forest Service officials, for their alleged role in Ulliburu mining scam in Keojnhar district. Till now 12 officials, eight of forest department and four of mining, have been suspended in connection with their alleged complicity in the scam.

Wildlife criminals convicted in Manas, Assam

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Barpeta had found guilty on eleven persons and sentenced them to 3 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each u/s 51 (1) and similar sentence u/s 51 (1-A) of the Wildlife Protection Act, both sentences shall run concurrently. The case was registered by Manas tiger reserve officials in March 2009 in connection with the seizure of 4 kg of tiger bone, 3 leopard skins, 1 elephant tusk, 1 piece of rhino skin and body parts pangolin, sloth bear, otter, sambar, hog deer. Court found that these accused persons who are either hunters or traders of animals and animals articles, have in their greed plundered forests and killed millions of innocent animals causing many animals to extinct and threatening many others. Living creatures being dependent on each other and the survival of the human race also being dependent on them has caused great concern in our society to these rampant killings. As such, the perpetrators of such crime should not be dealt leniently.

Sansar Chand's co-accused convicted in huge seizure of wildlife articles

Two co-accused of Sansar Chand were found guilty by trial court and convicted in a case registered on 1992 in Delhi. The case involves the seizure of 3 tiger skins, 29 leopard skins, 2 clouded leopard skins, 5 crocodile skins and other wildlife articles. Sansar Chand had already discharged from this case in 2008 and remaining two accused were now convicted. Court found that the recovered skins were derived from wild life animals which are specified respective Schedules of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and thus accused have contravened the provisions of section 49 & 49(B)(1) of the Act, punishable u/s 51 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Accordingly, both accused are held guilty and are convicted for the offence u/s 49 & 49(B)(1) of Wild Life (Protection) Act.

Villagers killed leopards in Himachal and West Bengal

Local people were killed a leopard in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh on 16 August and in another incident  a leopard was beaten to death in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on 17 August 2013.
