Poaching and seizures reported on last week

CID forest cell of Karnataka police seized a tiger skin and bone and arrested four people near Kollegal in Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka.

In Uttarakhand, two poachers were arrested in connection with killing of a tiger in Terai West Forest Division on 22nd July 2012. A leopard skin was seized and two persons were arrested by police in Haldwani, Nainital. In Bageshwar district one person was arrested with a gall bladder of Himalayan black bear. In Kotdwar, Pauri district 67kg of elephant ivory were also seized by police. In Rajaji National Park, four illegal fish poachers were arrested.

In Chhattisgarh three persons were arrested by police with a leopard skin in Raipur.

In Andhra Pradesh a person was arrested by forest department of killing a leopard in Mahbubnagar district.

Poachers were killed two rhinos in Kaziranga, Assam last week one each in Bagori and Agratoli ranges.

Tamil Nadu forest department arrested a person with 350 fresh water tortoises in Pudukkottai district.

Suspected elephant poisoning in Assam-Arunachal border

Two wild elephants were found dead near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Lakhimpur district, Assam on 6 October 2012. A member of a notorious tiger poaching gang based in Haryana was arrested in Katerniaghat wildlife sanctuary Uttar Pradesh on 6 October 2012. Five years jail for leopard skin smuggler

In a speedy trial of a leopard skin case registered on 20 February 2012, a Nepali citizen was convicted by court in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Chief Judicial Magistrate had sentenced the accused to five years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine on 27 September 2012 in connection with the seizure of four leopard skins.

AK-47 rifles used to kill rhinos in Assam

A post mortem of the carcass of one of the two Kaziranga National Park rhinos, which died of injuries last week after poachers shot at them, revealed that an AK series rifle was used.
