A female elephant died of bullet injuries on 24 June 2012 under Palamau tiger reserve area of Jharkhand, officials suspects that the bullets might have hit the pachyderm during an encounter between naxalites and security personnel.

Peacock feathers seized in Chennai

Tamil Nadu forest officials arrested three persons in Chennai on 25 June 2012 for selling peacock feathers. It is interested to know under which power forest dept. has done this action. Peacock poaching is prohibited but selling of shed feathers are not prohibited under Wildlife Protection Act 1972. Interestingly there is no mechanism in place to find out feathers selling in markets are come from poached birds or shed feathers.

Two Tibetan origins arrested with a leopard skin

Two Tibetan origin people based in Himachal Pradesh were arrested by Uttarakhand police with a leopard skin and huge amount of cash in Pauri district on last night. It is believed that duo were come there to collect illegal wildlife goods from Garhwal region. This incident once again underlines the illegal trade link between India, Nepal and Tibet/ China on Asian Big Cats.

Forest dept. employees arrested for tiger poaching

The Chandrapur forest division (Maharashtra) officials nabbed a five-member gang of poachers on 15 June 2012. Three of them were working for the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) as water hole observers. The five are being quizzed for their role in the chopping of a full-grown tiger in Borda. The mutilated carcass of a tiger sans head and paws, and cut into 10 pieces was recovered in Borda jungle along the Chichpalli-Borda road on May 18.

Body parts of a five year old male tiger was found on 5 June 2012 near a water hole in Kathotia village in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. Animal was electrocuted by poachers and later cut into two pieces. 8 people were detained by forest officials in connection with this poaching. This is the second time in the last two weeks that a body of the tiger was cut into pieces, the first case was reported from Chandrapur, Maharashtra on 18 May 2012.

Four wild tigers died in last 24 hours

Four wild tiger deaths reported in the last 24 hours. In the first case a tiger was found dead in Bandipur tiger reserve, Karnataka yesterday. In Maharashtra, a tiger cub rescued yesterday from near Pench tiger reserve died today. In another case of Uttarakhand, an injured tiger rescued from Ramnagar division on last week was died during treatment at Nainital zoo today. In the fourth case, an adult male tiger was found dead with injuries in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve, Madhya Pradesh in the evening.
