Captive elephant owner convicted in Delhi

In a case registered in 2007, a Delhi court had recently convicted a person for illegally keeping a female elephant calf without any ownership certificate or transit permit. The court held that the accused acquired the alleged elephant in contravention of provisions of sections 40(2)/42/48A & 49 of the Wildlife Protection Act.

Leopard poachers sentenced to five years imprisonment

CJM Court in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand had convicted two poachers in connection with a case registered by SOG of police on 18 June 2011. One the accused who caught with two leopard skins sentenced to five years imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine and other accused caught with one leopard skin was sentenced to four years imprisonment and Rs 4,000 fine.

Tiger shot dead due to pressure of local people in Kerala

In a mockery of wildlife conservation in India, Kerala forest department had shot dead a male tiger in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on 2 December 2012 by declaring animal as dangerous to human lives due to pressure of local people and politicians. This animal was not attacked any human beings but only killed livestock for its survival. Since last few weeks when the issue of cattle lifting started, even local media and politicians supported the idea of villagers "eliminating the tiger". It's very clear that Kerala govt. was not followed the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines on Section 11 (1) (a) of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 (Declaring big cats as man eaters).

Poaching and seizures reported on last week

CID forest cell of Karnataka police seized a tiger skin and bone and arrested four people near Kollegal in Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka.

In Uttarakhand, two poachers were arrested in connection with killing of a tiger in Terai West Forest Division on 22nd July 2012. A leopard skin was seized and two persons were arrested by police in Haldwani, Nainital. In Bageshwar district one person was arrested with a gall bladder of Himalayan black bear. In Kotdwar, Pauri district 67kg of elephant ivory were also seized by police. In Rajaji National Park, four illegal fish poachers were arrested.

In Chhattisgarh three persons were arrested by police with a leopard skin in Raipur.

In Andhra Pradesh a person was arrested by forest department of killing a leopard in Mahbubnagar district.

Poachers were killed two rhinos in Kaziranga, Assam last week one each in Bagori and Agratoli ranges.

Tamil Nadu forest department arrested a person with 350 fresh water tortoises in Pudukkottai district.

Five years jail for leopard skin smuggler

In a speedy trial of a leopard skin case registered on 20 February 2012, a Nepali citizen was convicted by court in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Chief Judicial Magistrate had sentenced the accused to five years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine on 27 September 2012 in connection with the seizure of four leopard skins.

AK-47 rifles used to kill rhinos in Assam

A post mortem of the carcass of one of the two Kaziranga National Park rhinos, which died of injuries last week after poachers shot at them, revealed that an AK series rifle was used. These incidents vindicated the suspicion of the park authorities and the Forest Department that insurgents/ militants active in the Karbi Anglong hills could be involved in poaching of rhinoceros.

Sansar Chand's wife Rani convicted in leopard skin case

Notorious illegal wildlife trader Sansar Chand's wife Rani was convicted today (28 September 2012) in a leopard skin case registered in 2004. CJM-Court in Pauri sentenced all the accused including Rani to maximum imprisonment given under Wildlife Protection Act. The case dates back to April 2004 when three people were arrested with 2 leopard skins, skeletons, 2 jakal skins and 1 iron trap at Pauri district, Uttarakhand. The arrested people were disclosed that they were killed the animals as per the instructions of Rani.

FD Investigation: Tigers caught in traps for herbivores

After months of investigation Maharashtra forest department concluded that on 26 April 2012 at Palasgaon range the tigers were accidentally caught in the steel jaw traps installed by local poachers for herbivores. It is difficult to believe the version of Forest department, steel jaw traps used in this case of poaching is different from the trap of catching herbivores and it's definitely kept for poaching tigers. 7 Sudanese students apprehended with sandalwood logs

Seven Sudanese nationals studying in different colleges in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu were apprehended with sandalwood logs by customs officials at Coimbatore Airport on 25 September 2012, just minutes before they were about to board a Sharjah bound flight. Each student was hiding about 7kgs of sandalwood in their baggage while passing through emigration checks.

Three people arrested by Shyampur police, Haridwar with 15.5kg of elephant ivory on 12 May 2000 was convicted by CJM-Haridwar this week. All three accused were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 10,000 fine each.
